I don't normally participate in online/blog contests, but this is one that I couldn't bring myself to pass up. Caroline, an uber-stylish blogger from Sweden, is demonstrating the versatility of having a small number of pieces. I'm a minimalist when it comes to my personal style, and I wholeheartedly believe that mixing and matching generates some of the best outfits and makes the pieces feel like new again. So let's just hope I can add that leather jacket and skirt to my wardrobe next! ;)

Ai has such a soft and airy presence in photographs and even when gracing the runways. To this day, Asian faces in the fashion industry are few and far between, but Ai gave way to their heightened visibility and is still one of the few prominent Asian supermodels on the scene.

2009 will be a momentous year--new presidency under O, what's to come of the recent Gaza bombings, continual adjustment to the recession, and my graduating from UCLA in June and being thrust into the job market at the most inopportune time. There is no denying that times will be rough. But regardless of external events and circumstances, I recognize that change should materialize internally as well. There is still much room for personal growth and gaining of knowledge, and no better time to pledge for it than in the ongoing year. Trust me when I say that I was never one who deemed new years resolutions as practical nor effective, but I'll admit that I can work on implementing several changes in my own life. Only time will tell how I'll hold up though. Updates to be had. Good night and good luck.

I'll leave you with a quote from Alexander Wang, of which I wholeheartedly agree (down to the pineapple buns):
"Hmmm I haven't really made any new year's resolutions—I find that its better to surprise myself than to have expectations I can't keep. But I guess if I had to make one it would be to eat more organic…no junk food. Except for maybe pineapple buns!"

Creative industries are rightly named so when mainly constituted of experimentation, innovation, and the unconventional. Aside from conforming to consumer needs, these industries must constantly adopt a new-aged way of thinking, seeing, and creating. But what happens when that creativity becomes stale? I often feel this is the case, especially in fashion. Editorial spreads, collections, brand visions all have yielded to pressures of retail and ad sales, therefore generating the same glossy looks that no longer produce the fervor and sentiment that once filled an eager enthusiast of this particular art form. And yes, I get that the fashion industry has been undergoing drastic economic woes (just look at Conde Nast's recent history), because who can afford to spend--or is even willing to admit to spending--their hard-pressed money on luxury goods as fleeting as fashion? The same applies to designers, as evidenced by Doo.Ri's and Zac Posen's recent ventures into lower-priced lines for the safe "recessionista" (which needs to be banished into a book of never-to-be-used-again words, just saying). But that should not call for a complete and utter disregard of what's inventive and cutting-edge, as seen by the multitude of spreads above--all styled in the same lackluster Prada ensemble.

So if there is a scarcity of updates here, you'll know exactly why.

Jeff Koons' works extensively exploit mass culture iconography, and I can't help but think that his steel sculptures of inflatable animals would have been better suited for this shoot.
